June 30- July 7, 2007
The second summer team joined us from Houston, Texas with a team of twelve hard working and enthusiastic volunteers. Part of the team consisted of the ‘HOGS’ (Happy Old Geezer’s Society) who were insistent on working through the heat of the day to get all of their projects finished, which they did very well. They finished installing tile, installed a new security wall, lighting fixtures, ceiling fans, built a new rack in the wheelchair repair shop and repaired the wheelchair lift on our bus. This team was so hard working that they finished the construction projects planned for the entire week by Tuesday and continued to tackle more projects. They engineered and began work on ‘Rio Hogo,’ the drainage and retention wall on our campus engineered to redirect water away from the dormitories.
This team was also very active in feeding hungry children at three different feeding centers each morning. Many of the children there came from poor rural families and the breakfast that the team provided was often the only meal they received all day.
This team also ministered to prisoners in a local facility, distributed many bags of clothes, along with bags of rice, beans and oil to poor families in need.
The team also distributed wheelchairs at the Push Hub. They were extremely touched by an older woman who had Alzheimer’s Disease. She was living with her daughter, three grand children and her husband whom she shared a wheelchair with. The team was able to fit her in her own wheelchair so that both she and her family could have a better quality of life.
