Push International and Padres y Compadres (a Mexican children’s therapy organization) work collaboratively at our Mazatlan Hub. The dream began when Rita Correa Meraz, a mother of a young child with a disability, saw the unmet need for children’s therapy. Steve Oliver (Push International co-founder) saw the unmet need of mobility equipment and sustainable services for children and adults with disabilities. The two began working together to construct the Mazatlan Hub and the dream became a reality.
Construction began at the Hub in 2003 when USA donors, local Mexican government officials and Mexican businesses including Pacifico Beer, and Emerald Bay Hotel and Resort generously donated a city block worth of land to create the facility.

  • In 2004 the children’s rehabilitation center was built. It is a large fully equipped clinic where children from the local community come to receive services 5 days per week.

  • In 2005 the kitchen was built and enabled the clinic to stay open longer throughout the day and feed children who receive therapy all day long.

  • In 2006 the old wheelchair repair and maintenance shop, cyber café and sewing center were constructed. The horse arena and stalls also went up in late 2006. Now children from the community are able to receive horse therapy 5 days per week.

  • In 2007 two dormitories were constructed to house teams of volunteers who came to work at the Hub. With volunteer labor, a large outdoor covered brick patio was also constructed during the summer of 2007 which is now used as a meeting place for volunteers and feeding area for the children.

  • In early 2008 four more dormitories (orange) were constructed to house teams of volunteers. An occupational therapy and speech therapy room (yellow/green) was added to complete the gamut of therapy interventions available at the Hub.

  • In January of 2009 Push International moved into the newly constructed D building on the shared campus which now houses a new wheelchair repair and maintenance shop. In 2009 we were also able to open a new sensory stimulation room (pink/blue) where children with special needs can receive private and specialized therapy. In late May 2009, a therapy pool was installed is now used in therapeutic intervention with children and adults 3 times per week.

  • In March 2010 Push International opened a new wheelchair warehouse on campus. This new building doubled the space we had available to store equipment, parts and related equipment. This added space now allows us to ship and house more inventory and construct higher quality and more customized equipment. In May 2010 the new Occupational Therapy Gym opened its doors to an excited giggling group of special children. The new room was constructed to facilitate imaginative and integrative play opportunities for children and families with special needs.

  • The campus is growing and adding new services every day. If you would like more information about the campus or if you would like to become involved in the construction process please contact Jeff Lair at jeff.lair@pushinternational.org
