Project # 1: Casa de “Chewy” ~ The home of Señora Dulce and her children got a major face lift when Push Volunteer Team 19 completed a ramped access so that young “Chewy” could get up to the front door using his wheelchair. Chewy has cerebral palsey and is very spastic. The door to the small house where his family lives is quite high off the street level. Earlier, Occupational Therapy Students from Team 16 designed a switch-back ramp with the help and guidance of our local Mexican alliance partners so that Chewy’s mom and his younger sister could handle pushing the wheelchair up the incline to the door.
Inside the home, access to the bathing area was dramatically improved and hygienically upgraded. Foundations and walls were installed. Next, a cement floor was poured to link the bathing area to the front room of the tiny home. Once the roof is completed, the project will be another example of how donations and support to Push International translate into positive and immediate benefit for Mexican families in need.
Project # 2: Casa de Kristi ~ Kristi works in the kitchen preparing food for all the Teams of Push Volunteers when they work in Mazatlán. She, her husband, and their 3 small children live in a tiny house made from shipping pallets. The floor is dirt. The one bed in the house which serves all five members of the young family sits directly on the dirt floor.
Her 12-year old son Tonio is disabled and uses a walker for stability.
An out house serves as their only toilet facilities.
Sandwiched in between wheelchair distributions from Push’s wheelchair shop at Padres Y Compadres, volunteers from Team 19 found time to pour a concrete floor inside of Kristi’s house and enclosed the wood pallet built home with brick walls. Imagine the impact this has in the daily lives of the grateful family living there.
Upcoming Makeovers!
Push International raised funds to improve the homes of at least 3 other families in need in 2011. We plan to have therapy teams make home visits and recommendations as to proper home modifiactions for our PyC families. Then construction or church based teams will implement the recommended changes. Yet another example of putting donor's dollars straight to work and connecting our teams from all over the country through their colloborative work in Mazatlan, Mexico! Stay tuned for more updates!
