Marcel is a 3 year old boy from El Fuerte, Sinaloa, Mexico who was born prematurely and experienced a severe lack of oxygen at birth resulting in slowed development. Marcel and his parents traveled over 6 hours by bus to receive consultation from Push International at the Mazatlan facility. A team of 3 volunteer occupational therapy students from the University of Indianapolis interviewed Marcel and his family then retreated into the equipment warehouse to find the perfect piece of equipment for him. After sorting through the donated equipment, they found a walker just his size. With the help of Sergio, the full-time Push International on-site mechanic, they cleaned and refurbished the walker. Next, they determined a sling would be required to support him as his legs developed, so they hand sewed a sling to attach to the walker, which would help the child develop. Marcel was placed in the walker and after consultation from the volunteers and some reassuring smiles; he began walking across the patio. These images capture his first steps as his laughter filled the air and brought everyone to tears. The excitement of Marcel was only surpassed by that of his father who had never seen his son walk.
A simple gift of $30.00 changed this child’s life.
